NOTE: After spending five years with a burning desire to create a location independent lifestyle, I feel somewhat guilty writing this post… but it needs to be said… so here goes:

I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time traveling this year.

In the first eight weeks I’ve spent time in Des Moines, Denver, Boulder, Breckenridge, Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

In the next eight weeks I’ll spend time in Austin, Breckenridge, Indiana, New York, Tuscan, Des Moines and Vegas.

It’s pretty much new city every week… which has led me to an interesting paradigm shift.

When you’re living in one place and only traveling once every month or two, travel is vacation. It’s a breath of fresh air. Something exciting and peaceful at the same time.

When you’re on the road nonstop, traveling becomes more stressful than enjoyable because you’re constantly worried about making your travel plans, anticipating about the next trip and you’re always in a state of hurrying up and then waiting.

‘Home’ starts to be hotel rooms, airports, and taxicabs. You begin to know those places like you know your own bedroom. They become such a natural part of life and they lose the glamour they once had.

And, ironically, your actual ‘home’ becomes your new vacation spot. The breath of fresh air. The get-a-way. The place that is exciting and peaceful… all at the same time.

I’m in Breckenridge right now for 10 days.

I spend each night staring at the stars. Each morning drinking tea and looking at the mountains, completely wrapped up in the beauty of nature around me.

All the stress melts away. No deadlines. No funky smelling cabs. No TSA pat downs.

Just simplicity in existing. Just… being.

This is my new vacation.

Today I was studying Ramit Sethi’s sales page. Many people don’t realize how talented he is at writing copy… For his latest product ‘Find Your Dream Job’ he’s written a 46 page sales letter that is absolutely phenomenal.

Many people think this is crazy… so I decided to break this video down to show you the EXACT framework top copywriters use for long form sales copy. (And how Ramit is using it, too.) Then I’ll break down a few of the psychological triggers he’s using to influence you to buy his product. I know I didn’t catch everything in the video, so if i you see stuff to add, leave it in the comments below.

This sales page is going in my swipe file, for sure.

Check it out:

by Danaan Parry

Sometimes I feel that my life is a series of trapeze swings. I’m either hanging on to a trapeze bar swinging along or, for a few moments in my life, I’m hurtling across space in between trapeze bars.

Most of the time, I spend my life hanging on for dear life to my trapeze-bar-of-the-moment. It carries me along at a certain steady rate of swing and I have the feeling that I’m in control of my life.

I know most of the right questions and even some of the answers.

But every once in a while as I’m merrily (or even not-so-merrily) swinging along, I look out ahead of me into the distance and what do I see? I see another trapeze bar swinging toward me. It’s empty and I know, in that place in me that knows, that this new trapeze bar has my name on it. It is my next step, my growth, my aliveness coming to get me. In my heart of hearts I know that, for me to grow, I must release my grip on this present, well-known bar and move to the new one.

Each time it happens to me I hope (no, I pray) that I won’t have to let go of my old bar completely before I grab the new one. But in my knowing place, I know that I must totally release my grasp on my old bar and, for some moment in time, I must hurtle across space before I can grab onto the new bar.

Each time, I am filled with terror. It doesn’t matter that in all my previous hurtles across the void of unknowing I have always made it. I am each time afraid that I will miss, that I will be crushed on unseen rocks in the bottomless chasm between bars. I do it anyway. Perhaps this is the essence of what the mystics call the faith experience. No guarantees, no net, no insurance policy, but you do it anyway because somehow to keep hanging on to that old bar is no longer on the list of alternatives. So, for an eternity that can last a microsecond or a thousand lifetimes, I soar across the dark void of “the past is gone, the future is not yet here.”

It’s called “transition.” I have come to believe that this transition is the only place that real change occurs. I mean real change, not the pseudo-change that only lasts until the next time my old buttons get punched.

I have noticed that, in our culture, this transition zone is looked upon as a “no-thing,” a noplace between places. Sure, the old trapeze bar was real, and that new one coming towards me, I hope that’s real, too. But the void in between? Is that just a scary, confusing, disorienting nowhere that must be gotten through as fast and as unconsciously as possible?

NO! What a wasted opportunity that would be. I have a sneaking suspicion that the transition zone is the only real thing and the bars are illusions we dream up to avoid the void where the real change, the real growth, occurs for us. Whether or not my hunch is true, it remains that the transition zones in our lives are incredibly rich places. They should be honored, even savored. Yes, with all the pain and fear and feelings of being out of control that can (but not necessarily) accompany transitions, they are still the most alive, most growth-filled, passionate, expansive moments in our lives.

We cannot discover new oceans unless we have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

Anonymous

So, transformation of fear may have nothing to do with making fear go away, but rather with giving ourselves permission to “hang out” in the transition between trapezes. Transforming our need to grab that new bar, any bar, is allowing ourselves to dwell in the only place where change really happens. It can be terrifying. It can also be enlightening in the true sense of the word. Hurtling through the void, we just may learn how to fly.

The hardest part about about making progress in life is making tough decisions.

I’m not talking about the little decisions… What to have for breakfast. What to wear. Where to go eat dinner.

I’m talking about the monumental decisions that change the course of your life. Do I quit my job? Do I move to a new city? What’s the next chapter of life for me?

These are the hard decisions.

They’re scary.

They’re numbing.

They’re stressful.

And they slow you down.

After you make the decision, all that’s left is taking action. Ironically, that part is easy if you’re grounded in the decision you’ve made because you have no other choice. There’s no turning back. You have to do it to move forward. And your heart knows that.

The times I’m most stressed are when I’m in the middle of making an extremely emotional decision that has a large impact on my life.

Usually I confuse this with taking action. But it’s not about taking action.

Yes the conversations are hard. Yes Resistance is a giant bitch. Yes taking action requires being uncomfortable.

But the foundation of all action starts with making a decision… and committing.

Last week I did a program at the University of Iowa prior to an Etiquette Dinner. This program is a freaking blast. I just wish we would have had more time. Here are a few things we talked about:

Why The Job Market Is Going To Be The Hardest For 2010 / 2011 Graduates

How To Get Your Foot In The Door With Virtually ANY Company In The U.S.

What Personal Brands Are, Why They’re Important, and How You Can Use One To Standout

Ways My Friends Invented Their Own Jobs

What To Do If A Pornstar Has The Same Name As You

How To Build A $70K Business With Less Than $1,000 of Expenses (And Working A Few Hours Each Day)

How One Intern’s Reputation Is Ruined For Life… Thanks to Facebook

The Three Things You Can Do TODAY To Get Started With These Tools

I haven’t posted in a long time. And it might be a while before I post again. But I felt compelled to write this because if you want to learn about building an online business (that doesn’t suck), you need to sign up for the Third Tribe. Like, now.

What is the Third Tribe? We’ve all been beat to death hearing about the sketchy internet marketers promising the magic bullet that will build us a $1,000,000 business practically overnight if you follow their 181 step spamming guide. Yuck.

But then we have all watched the “cool social media kids” who spend all day writing on blogs, chatting on Twitter, but not knowing a thing about making a profit or building an actual business.

The Third Tribe is the new option. It’s not about getting rich quick. It’s not about getting a million followers on Twitter. It’s about delivering real value and getting paid fairly for the value you provide.

Aside from the founding A-list cewebrities, Brian Clark, Sonia Simone, Darren Rowse, and Chris Brogan, you’ll also be getting solid marketing advice from these rock stars (who I read almost every day): Dave Navarro, Naomi Dunford, Laura Roeder and Johnny Truant.

If that isn’t enough of a reason to sign up… Check out the price: $27/month. Just knowing these people, I can almost guarantee that the value provided will be 5-10x that.

And if you’re wondering… No. Those aren’t affiliate links. I just know it’s a stellar deal that won’t last past Feb 5th and thought you should know about it.

It’s a program put on by ABI and is like a collegiate version of Business Horizons. I got to chat with some really cool students who (hopefully) will jump on the blogging bandwagon soon. Check out some of their thoughts of the week right here.

When someone comes to me with an idea, there’s one question I ask before anything else: “How will you market it?” The fact is, if you can’t market your business/product/idea, you’ve got nothing.

The good news? I’ve spent numerous hours learning how to market products online. If you can tell me about your perfect customer… I can help you find a way to reach them.

The internet has changed the marketing world. Many people may disagree with this… They’ll argue that, conceptually, nothing has changed. I mean, we’re still finding ways to connect with our customers, right?

Of course.

But what has changed is our ability to laser target the EXACT customer you’re looking for. Before the internet, what were your options? TV, Radio, Billboards, Direct Mail, etc… And not one of those is cheap.

Now you can throw up a test campaign on a Pay-Per-Click system and know within a day whether or not your ad is effective. Pretty amazing, eh?

Not only that, but our ability to test and measure messages has changed, too. For example… every time you send a mass message, you should split test the headline. Split testing refers to sending two of the exact same messages, but changing one thing (like the subject.) Based on the open-rate of the message, you’ll know exactly which subject lines are most effective.

Do this over the course of a year and you’ll have a database of EXTREMELY powerful information you can use in all different aspects of your marketing campaign.

Marketing is changing… The internet is making it cheaper, faster and more effective to advertise. If you don’t have an online strategy and don’t know where to begin, shoot me a message and let’s see if I can help.
