Set Fewer Goals in 2009
One year ago today I was in Florence with my girlfriend. In fact, if you’re reading this and it’s the afternoon, we were probably walking by the place Galileo lived.
Fast forward to now: Today I’ll be spending the afternoon in my cube reviewing 2009 marketing initiatives. That’s how much my life has changed in one short year.
I spent last January and February in Europe… so I did a lot of my “2008 planning” from trains, hostels, and the homes of random strangers (thanks to couchsurfing.) I had so much time to think, I ended up writing down about a dozen huge things to do in 2008. Most of which, I ended up skipping entirely.
Lesson learned: Too many goals dilute focus.
This year I have three things to focus on… Writing. Relationships. And creating some sort of passive income stream.
That’s it.
See… a lot of people focus on activity and not necessarily progress. It’s easy to stay busy doing bazillion things, but not get anywhere. Because managing time is easy… but managing your focus is really hard to do. (Especially if you feel like you have A.D.D.)
So for 2009, don’t create a long list a goals. Find two or three things that would make the most difference in your life and focus on output instead of activity.
It’s going to be a great year… The best of luck to you!

Andy: You’ve nailed a very important issue for future success–keep fewer goals. I’ve worked with top execs at major corps for years…Nearly all of them limit goals to 3 or 4 per year. It takes some work to learn how to do it, but it’s worth the focus and the time managing.
Thanks Dan. It was nice chatting with you last night!
