Skip the MBA… How About Six Months With Seth?
I recently wrote about whether or not I should get an MBA… Yesterday I ran across this opportunity from Seth Godin.
He’s looking for a few smart, nice, charismatic, fast moving, motivated people to be part of a six month program with him. This is what the program will consist of:
One hour a day of class/dialogue
Four hours a day of working on my projects
Three hours a day of working on your personal project
Five hours a day of living, noticing, doing and connecting
If you’re considering an MBA, here are a few reasons why you should do this instead:
- Seth is a marketing genius. Being coached and mentored by him is a life changing opportunity
- An MBA costs thousands of dollars… This program is free and you’ll walk away with some amazing experiences.
- It’s only six months… That’s a relatively short term commitment. Many companies are looking to reduce expenses… See if you can take a six month unpaid leave. The company won’t have to lay someone off and you get the opportunity to work with Seth in New York.
- With an MBA, you’ll be focused on classroom work… This is 100% real world.
- If you’re working on a project/business/etc, this gives you time to get it off the ground while using Seth as a sounding board.
If you’re looking to get some insight into what working with Seth is like, check out Ryan Stephens. Ryan recently spent a few months interning with Seth. (And he’s got a great marketing mind.)

6 months unpaid? I realize you are getting a great long term value from Seth, but unpaid and in NY, one of the most expensive cities in the world?
Andy, I saw this the other day too and it looks too good to be true. Learning from someone and getting hands on training with probably the most trusted name in marketing will surely be a life changing trip.
The selected few will no doubt be on there way to squashing meatball sundaes across the world! BTW are you going to apply??
@Pete - I agree that having to physcially be in NY (without income) creates a large problem for a lot of people… but it’s a lot cheaper than a tuition bill (and you’ll probably learn a lot more.) Plus, if you’re working for three hours a day on your own projects/business, you can use that to generate a little revenue to help get by.
In reality, there are a lot of people who would pay for an opportunity like this.
@Greg - How great would it be to spend one on one time with him? I can only imagine everything someone could learn in six months…
Not sure if I’m going to apply or not… From a timing/feasibility standpoint, I don’t see it working. But who knows. Maybe applying now will open the door for something down the road. Have you thought about applying?
You should do this, Andy! As for the “free” internship - I’m sure there’s a way to get this funded from your folks here in Iowa and elsewhere.
Most people that I know who have tackled their MBA have often commented on how much their ‘real world’ experience, prior to entering, brought to the program for them. The suggested rule of thumb is that once you achieve your undergraduate degree, work a year or so in your career field and then jump back in to an MBA program - the reason being what you bring with you from the experience greatly enhances your education.
I can only imagine what 6 months with Seth would do for your MBA program. Extremely tempting…sounds like something that would ‘propel you forward’ not to mention the huge long term ‘resume value add’ that you will have as you move through your career. Along with the many other individuals that Seth will enable you to connect, network and gain relationships with. This is the kind of opportunity that can be truly life changing.
Very exciting and needs careful thought and planning either way.

First of all, thanks so much for the shout out Andy. Quite a few people have asked me about my opportunity with Seth, would I recommend it, etc.
The short answer is yes, if you have the means to do it and the timing is right then there’s no doubt it is a great opportunity.
@Pete - Andy’s right. There are tons of people that pay LARGE sums of money to learn from experts in their field, and that’s just online. Imagine would many people would pay to learn from a guy like Seth Godin. Certainly living without income in NYC is *TOUGH* (potentially impossible), but if you’re creative enough to work for Seth, chances are you’re creative enough to find a way to make it work.
@Robin - Great points about networking and gaining relationships. Some of the people I interned with this summer are going to change the world for the better. I keep in contact with a a couple of them, and we’ve discussed future projects together.
It was an invaluable experience.
