Welcome to work… Kid.

Kid – I hate that word

KIDS go to school
KIDS don’t have jobs
KIDS don’t have a 401K
KIDS don’t pay insurance, rent, or student loan bills
KIDS are still under their parents wings

So why am I still considered a “kid” at work?

Because I’m a only 22.

It’s a challenge every 20 something is going to have to deal with…  here are some methods to cope with it:

  1. Don’t take offense – The people calling you “kid” probably have years of experience behind them… they basically have the right to call you a kid because, when it comes to the work world, we really are “kids.”  Think of it as being in Elementary school… of your career.
  2. Start email relationships – As one of my coworkers told me… One of the greatest advantages (or disadvantages, depending how you look at it) of email is that you don’t know who’s on the other end.  All of the defining characteristics are gone… Height, weight, age, race.  All you can go by is their name.

This can come in very handy.  If an email is the first impression you make with a person, make sure you know email etiquette and that you write with talent.  People will respect this and your age won’t become a factor.  When you meet in person, take it as a compliment when they say, “I didn’t know you were just a kid!”

(But please don’t respond with… “And I didn’t know you were so old!”)

  3. Use age to your advantage – When people see you as a “kid,” it gives you the chance to impress them.  Especially with the stigma our generation currently has… if you go above and beyond what is expected, the “kid” title will quickly fade away.
  4. Don’t make “kid-like” mistakes – This means:
    -
    Having you clothes ironed.
    - Not typing like u r txting some1.
    - Knowing dinner etiquette.
    - Showing up on time.
    - Shaving each morning.
    - Performing at your best, every single day.

  5. Have a baby – If you have a kid… you’ve got to be considered an adult. J Just kidding.
