What I’ve learned from man’s best friend
I’ve had Zoey for six weeks now and I couldn’t imagine life without her… but having a dog changes your world.
Zoey’s taught me a number of things already…
(Note - the pink and orange pillow is my girlfriend’s… not mine.)
Patience – She’s a smart dog… but she’s not going to learn to jump through a ring of fire anytime soon. Each day presents a new challenge and it’s really taught me to take things slowly and don’t expect everything to be fixed overnight.
Time Management – I thought I didn’t have much time before… I feel like that time has been cut in half. Can you imagine what having kids would be like!?
Responsibility – I went to Winefest last weekend; instead of going out with my friends after the wine, I had to come home to let out the dog. I have a feeling that that is going to become a common occurrence…
Consistency – Dogs learn from repetition. If you’re not consistent… she’ll never learn.
Leadership – Although she gives you the bright big puppy dog eyes, you’ve got to keep the end goal in mind when scolding her. A question I keep asking myself is, “If I don’t discipline her now, what will she be doing in a year?”
Exercise – I despise running. It’s not my thing and I don’t think it ever will be… Except when I’m running with the dog. For some reason, my mind is completely off of how tired I am, how heavy I’m breathing, and how I’d rather be walking…
And I’ve noticed from a simple walk every day, I have more energy and my mind is more clear.
That’s a lot of learning for a short six weeks. I wonder what the next six will bring…

Awww she’s so cute. We’re probably going to have to get a new Border Collie pup this winter. Our oldest Mike is rapidly failing, but he is almost 14. Thankfully we’ve had two boughten dogs and raised a litter of 8. So we’re ahead of the game on them. They add “keep this puppy occupied at all times” to the mix.
